The July New Moon in Cancer rises in the sky on July 9th and 10th, depending on where in the world you are. The themes of this New Moon include: accelerated change, reclamation and sovereignty, heightened sensitivity, a call to protect what we love, tension between existing authority and the revolutionary spirit, and deepening intimacy.

Each month, the New Moon offers us a chance for a refresh, a seed-planting, and a new beginning. We can look back at the past few months and reflect on all that has transpired as a way to arrive in the present moment with clarity on how we want to move forward.

With the possibility of new seeds to plant through intention and attention, let's take a deeper look at what the sky has in store for us during this New Moon cycle.

What does the New Moon in Cancer mean for me?

Luckily, we are all use to radical upending of our reality and quick change. The next few months are going to continue to bring about chaos and change at a very quick rate, which astrologists point out is a general theme for 2021. There is an acceleration of growth and evolution, which creates friction between the new way of being in the world and the old way that very much resists change.

We can use this time to notice where we are resisting the changes in our lives. Where are we attaching to a way of being, an idea of who we are, a job or relationship only because it is familiar? This is a hard question for many of us to ask because the answer can have the affect of shaking up our lives and disrupting what we have come to identify with. The act of sincere and authentic reflection on our attachments is one of the most important, as well as one of the bravest, inner-journeys one can go on.

The sky is supporting each of us in asking the hard questions so that we may move towards freedom from what has become too small for our expanding nature.

Astrologists also say that July has a theme of power and power issues.

During this New Moon, Mars is at twelve degrees of Leo and it is opposing Saturn in Aquarius and squaring Uranus. Mars in Leo is about assertion and courage to claim our individual needs. Mars and Uranus are both strong in individualism and carry the energy of wanting needs to be met. This can bring about impatience, irritability, and confrontation.

The Mars and Uranus energy is bumping up against Saturn's, which brings about pragmatism and wants to slow down and think things through. The tension experienced by this square, astrologists say, can show up in the way of earthquakes, financial volitilaty, cyber attacks, internet interruptions, and surprises of all sorts.

Experts point out Pluto's influence which will be steady until 2024 when it leaves Capricorn. We will continue to experience up-leveling of all of our collective systems. This includes education, politics, agriculture, ecological initiatives, etc. It's important that we take time to reflect on what is not working and what it is we want on a collective systems level. That way, we can be a part of the change and bring about well-being for all more swiftly.

The New Moon is highlighting the long running square between Eros, the asteroid which claimed mini planet status, and Pluto. Eros is known as "the female awakener" in mythology. In the myth of Eros, she is radical, speaks directly and frankly about what she needs without concern for consequences. Eros highlights  truth, integrity and making sure people's voices are heard, especially those who are often overlooked by authority. During this time, some of us will step into the Eros archetype and serve as megaphones for those whose voices need to be spotlighted. We can each awaken our Eros, the part of us that looks out into the world and goes fearlessly in the direction of service and justice, making sure we are all heard.

The Cancer sign is a gentle and protective sign that is very much about the home and family.
We may experience a heightened desire to take care of those we love with an increased sensitivity.

Pluto in Capricorn is opposing the sun and moon in Cancer, which can feel like someone or something in our personal or professional landscape is trying to overpower our experience and our energy. This is a time to take back our personal power in a loving and assertive way. It is time to stand up for what we believe in and step into the knowing that we are co-creators of our lives. This does not have to include anger or the debasing of anyone else. We can claim our autonomy with kindness and grace. If someone or a situation is trying to rule your experience, know that you have everything you need to claim your sovereignty and stand up for what you believe in.

During this moon cycle astrologists point to the widening circles of connection between people, forming a stronger and stronger web of humans dedicated to evolution, love, equality, and well-being for all. We can open our arms and our hearts to collaboration and community especially during this next month. This is a beautiful time to feed the relationships in our lives and tend to those that matter to us. You may also find yourself meeting new people who immediately feel close to your heart. The way forward is together.

On the flip side of this, you may experience a separation from relationships that no longer serve you. We have a limited amount of energy and time, and part of personal empowerment is to choose with whom and where we spend our time. Letting relationships come to completion can be painful, and yet we can soothe through this transition by offering gratitude for all of the gifts of the relationship as well as deep compassion for all involved.

Neptune is trine to the sun and moon and is in Pisces. Hence, this is the time for creativity, high-level thinking, and beauty. We can give ourselves generous amounts of time to listen inward to all that is coming through and create from the energy that is circulating. Set some time aside for writing, painting, making music, collaging, dancing, or any other art form so that when the energy sweeps through, you can create beauty for yourself and the world. Creative expression is also a wonderful way to process the experience we are having, especially that which transcends linear thinking.

The shadow side of this is that there can be a question around truth. The world is in a moment of distrusting the media, coupled with an infinite amount of sources of information and opinions on social media. This is a time to practice listening to intuition. In order to do this, especially if it is newer to you, what is required is rest and solitude. When we are nourished and when we are free from the distraction of other opinions, we can open up to the well-spring of wisdom inside.

Jupiter in Pisces will be trine with Mercury in Cancer, which lends to the ability to think big, to envision our individual and collective future with a higher perspective. Astrologists say this will bring more people into the spiritual journey. We are moving towards the collective agreement that we are more than our bodies, thoughts, and emotions. The spiritual aspect of life on Earth is going to support us in creating the changes globally that will lend to lasting change.

At the time of this new moon we have Venus and Mars in Leo. This brings about the energy of the heart. If you are looking for a new romantic relationship, this new moon is a beautiful time to make yourself available for that. Go to the places and engage in the activities that bring you joy, while keeping your eyes and heart open for new connections. This can also be a time for deepening intimacy in existing relationships.

What is very important is that we do whatever we need to do to feel resourced and nourished. Spending time in nature, with loved ones, solo time, spiritual practice, creative pursuits, and plenty of rest are some ways that we can take care of ourselves as the world continues its accelerated evolution. The more we bring ourselves into a calm, open, and joyful state the more we receive the immense gifts that are flowing all around us.

New Moon Ritual :: An Altar of Intention

This Cancer New Moon brings the combination of sensitivity, commitment to sovereignty, trusting in intuition, and radical shifts.

This a perfect time to anchor into your space and your ground through the ritual of creating an altar. An altar is a sacred place in our home where we can visit daily to center and connect with higher vision and our heart's intention.

Carve out some time to dedicate your focus to this empowering ritual. You deserve it. You can do this ritual on July 9th or 10th to experience the most potency of the New Moon, or any time within the next two weeks.

For this ritual, you will need a journal, a pen, and adornments to create your altar with. You might choose flowers, stones, crystals, talismans, fabrics, oracle cards, photos, and any other sacred enchantments that carry meaning to you. If you're unsure where to begin, you may be more clear after the following steps:

1. If you already have an altar, this is an opportunity to clear it, clean it, and start anew. If you do not have one yet, this is the time to build one. Your altar can be simple or more ornate, it's up to you. Whether you want it simple or ornate, use your intuition to adorn your altar. What is your most alive intention currently? What will allow you to access the sacred, to tune into the connection with source, and to feel supported on your path?

2. Find a spot in your home or bedroom that calls to you for your New Moon altar. It can be a low to the ground small table, chest, or the top of a table. Trust the part of your home that is calling to you as the place for your altar. Make sure it is clean, decluttered, and refreshed.

3. Once it's clear and ready, sit with its bareness for a short meditation so that you can clearly envision your intention before decorating it. Close your eyes, ground into your seat, and sense your body expanding in every direction.

Inhale slowly and deeply, as though wind is rising up into your body. Exhale slowly and imagine your breath washing down the body like rain back into the earth. In this way you will breathe: wind rising on the way up, rain washing any unneeded energy down the body and back into the earth. Repeat this breath several times.

4. As you continue to breathe, ask yourself any of the following questions. There is no right or wrong answer. Trust what comes up as an expression of your next expansion. Choose the question/s that most resonate with you:
What am I calling in?
What do I most desire?
What new beginning am I stepping into?
Who am I when I am most aligned and empowered?

5. Once you've sat with this energy and feel settled, write down your words of clarity. Again, trust what you feel and what arises. Let your pen flow until you are complete. If judgement arises, notice it, and let it rinse away on your exhale. Trust that there is no wrong way to do this, for it is about what is true in your heart.

Afterwards, review what you wrote. What key words from your writing stand out?  Be honest with yourself, and know that the New Moon in Cancer is supporting you to dream big.

6. Now begin to build your altar with this intention in mind. Be creative, follow your instincts, and add anything that feels like a clear 'Yes' without any doubt. If something feels off or questionable, put it aside. Let this altar be a sincere representation of your clarity, your readiness, your courage, your dream, and whatever theme this new beginning embodies.

7. You now have your New Moon Altar. Visit your altar daily, until the next new moon, for at least 3 minutes (or more) each day. You can meditate, journal, drink tea, stare at a candle flame, work with your oracle cards, or simply breathe. You choose. Every time you come to your altar, offer gratitude for all that you are, all that is unfolding, and the great mystery all around you.
